December Tourism, it’s a Stats Game

Lucy Valenti, President of the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) is hoping for well over 110,000 tourists to visit Nicaragua this December, if this year’s growth of nearly 9% over last year (2008) is accurate. December is one of the best months for receiving international tourists as well as those Nicaraguans that live abroad coming home for a Christmas and New Year visit.
Although not yet up on their web site, INTUR (The National Tourist Dept.) has statistics showing that up to August of this year, 626,170 foreign tourists entered Nicaragua, up by 50,533 (or 8.07%) compared to the same time last year. The last available INTUR statistics showed that the average stay for each visitor to Nicaragua lasted 7 days and they spent an average of US$49.10 per day. However; this stat was for the first 3 months of 2009 only and was from an “Exit Poll” of tourists.
CANATUR estimates that on average, each tourist who enters Nicaragua in December stays for about three weeks. The downside for CANATUR members in the hotel sector is that the Nicaraguan’s returning for a Christmas vacation will typically stay with family. In December 2008, 11,149 (13.8%) of the recorded “Tourists” were in fact Nicaraguans with a foreign residency. It will be interesting to see what this figure will be for this year, given the economic crisis, and the already reduced remittances from those Nicaraguans that normally come home for Christmas from the United States.
San Juan del Sur has experienced its usual mid-November increase in tourist traffic but so far mainly in the backpacker sector. The cruise season is well under way, albeit a later start to last year which means less cruise ships in 2009 but we should have about the same amount of cruise ships (40) in total for the season which ends in May 2010.

Turismo en Diciembre, un juego de estadísticas
Lucy Valenti, Presidente de la Cámara Nacional de Turismo (CANATUR) espera que más de 110,000 turistas visiten Nicaragua en diciembre, si el crecimiento de este año es de casi el 9% respecto al año pasado (2008) es correcto. Diciembre es uno de los mejores meses para la recepción de turistas internacionales, así como los nicaragüenses que viven en el extranjero que regresan a casa para una visita de Navidad y Año Nuevo.
Aunque aún no se ajusten en su sitio web, el INTUR (Instituto Nacional de Turismo) tiene estadísticas que muestran que hasta agosto de este año, 626,170 turistas extranjeros entraron a Nicaragua, arriba de 50.533 (o el 8,07%) en comparación con el mismo período del año pasado. Las últimas estadísticas disponibles de INTUR muestran que la estancia media de cada visitante a Nicaragua, duró 7 días y gastaron un promedio de 49,10 dólares por día. Sin embargo, esta estadística es para los 3 primeros meses de 2009 sólo fue de la salida y la “encuesta” de los turistas.
CANATUR estima que en promedio, cada turista que entra en Nicaragua, en diciembre se mantiene durante unas tres semanas. La desventaja para los miembros de CANATUR en el sector hotelero es que los nicaragüenses que regresan para unas vacaciones de Navidad normalmente se quedarán con su familia. En diciembre de 2008, 11,149 (13.8%) de los “turistas” eran en realidad nicaragüenses con residencia en el exterior. Será interesante ver cuál ser esta cifra para este año, dada la crisis económica, y las remesas ya han reducido de los nicaragüenses que normalmente vienen de los Estados Unidos a casa para la Navidad.
San Juan del Sur ha experimentado su habitual aumento del tráfico turístico a mediados de noviembre, pero hasta ahora principalmente en el sector de los mochileros. La temporada de cruceros está en marcha, aunque inició un poco más tarde que la del año pasado, lo que significa que habría menos cruceros que en 2009, pero debemos tener la misma cantidad de cruceros (40) en total para la temporada que termina en mayo de 2010.
