A Local Rotary International Club is forming in San Juan del Sur. Rotary clubs from Gillette, Wyoming and Woodstock, Vermont have been active in the area for years and encouraged a local group of both Nationals and Foreigners to form their own club. The Gillette Club will be coming in the week of Feb 9 to complete various projects during their visit including desks for schools , wells and water pump repairs for surrounding area schools. The San Juan del Sur Rotary Club first project is to repair and paint the Casa Integral. Jane Mirandette, treasurer of the club, coordinated the effort with the Gillette Wyoming group. This will be the first of many joint efforts with other Rotary Clubs. The club is essentially a friendship network so we expect to have a lot of fun while serving the community.
Rotary began as an idea more than 100 years ago. It is the first service club in the world. Today, Rotary flourishes worldwide with 1.2 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. The purpose of Rotary is to help communities through projects that will assist the neediest and enhance the community. A local club means access to funds, expertise and people working for positive community development.
Clubs are made up of people in the business community: owners, managers, doctors and other professional people coming together to serve their community. To form a club you must be sponsored by an existing club and we are honored to be sponsored by the Granada rotary club. Various meetings have occurred with the purpose of training the local club in protocol and coordinating activities. A strong bond has been forming between clubs and we expect to be working together closely. The directors of the local club are:
Luis Contreras – President
Patricia Garcia – Vice President
Hiedy Herrera – Secretary
Jane Mirandette – Treasurer
The club consists of mainly locals and represents the various professions within the community (electrician, teacher, restaurant owner, etc). The club is very excited about their participation in creating a positive and lasting impact in the community. If interested in joining call Luis Contreras at 8840-9963 or email rotarysjs@gmail.com.

I’d like to become involved with the Rotary Club in SjDS! I’ve never been an official member but have been close to several Clubs in different cities in the US. That is what brought my Family to Nicaragua in the first place, tagging along with Pittsburgh Rotary members involved in Gran Pacifica. My husband and I own a home there and although only visit 2-3 times a year for now we plan to live there permanently within 5 years. We’ve been taking Spanish lessons for over a year now and keep up with local events through many publications. Thank you for your consideration. Lori Whited.
I have passed your info on to Luis
My Rotary club from Ofallon, IL began working with the A. Jean Brugger Fundacion in San Juan in 2005, and partnered with the Rotary club of Jinotepe. Having a Rotary club in San Juan del Sur is terrific news! The community will certainly benefit from the great work Rotary International promotes all over the world.
I look forward to visiting when I return to San Juan del Sur.
