Not so Green
As Nicaragua continues to produce more and more home grown energy using renewable resources, the old power plants that burn diesel bunker fuel will become obsolete. Cesar Zamora from AEI, one of the power generation companies in Nicaragua, suggested that Nicaragua would be able to sell energy to other countries that require it. Zamora indicated that the plants could be used to generate power for the grid that is purchased by other countries in Central America and therefore they may be able to keep the generators working. However, if that is not possible they would be closed.

Rural Tourism
The National Assembly has approved a new law on the development of sustainable rural which will establish a new Sustainable Rural Tourism Office as part of INTUR (the Government Tourism Dept.). This office will work with municipalities, autonomous regions and indigenous communities. An important part of the law will be looking at “rescuing the cultural identity” of the rural areas while preserving the natural, cultural and biological diversity. It will encourage economically viable and sustainable initiatives and collectives that will promote job creation as well as meet standards and regulations so as to attract the participation of the private sector.

Safe Harbor
Nicaragua is proud to have its seaports certified under the International Maritime Organization ‘Safe Harbor’ program and will be going through the recertification as a result of the five year inspection. Representatives of the IMO will be in Nicaragua soon to inspect the work of the authorities in modernizing and updating security plans in the various seaports. The national port authorities conduct their own annual inspections which help towards obtaining the IMO 5 year certification. The National Port Company EPN is working on security plans, training and an exchange of knowledge in relation to all the standards required.

On the Road Again
50% of all Department of Rivas traffic fatalities so far this year were on motorbikes. In both the urban and rural areas many motorbike riders violate the law, such as; no helmets, excess passengers, high speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. As well, many do not have proper licensing, registration and insurance says the Acting Head of the Traffic Dept. of Rivas; Lt. Justo Cesar Guevara. He added that motorcycles make up more than half of the total vehicles registered in the Rivas Department; 10,700 are motorcycles. In 2012, out of 671 traffic accidents in the department, 540 were injury accidents and 255 were on motorcycles. Rivas Police have implemented a program where all riders who violate traffic laws and risk their lives and others are invited to participate in seminars that are taught every by Rivas Police every Tuesday at 2:00 pm.

History
On the 25th of February 1990, an election took place that saw The National Opposition Union of Violeta Chamorro beat the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN by its acronym in Spanish). The official results were; Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (UNO) with 777,552 votes or 54.73% and Daniel Ortega (FSLN) with 579,886 votes or 40.82%.

It’s Windy by George
The wind at this time of the year can play havoc with the ferry service to Ometepe and this year that has been compounded by a sand bar that has built up in the port of San Jorge. Ferry operators were calling for one of the dredgers working on the San Juan River to be sent up to San Jorge to deal with the problem. Ferry owners were also stuck with the costs of damage to propellers and drive shafts. They said that urgent action by the Port Authority (EPN) was needed in order to maintain the service for visitors and the island’s population.

No tan verde
Nicaragua continúa produciendo más y más energía utilizando recursos renovables, las centrales eléctricas viejas que queman combustible diesel bunker se quedan obsoletas. César Zamora de AEI, una de las empresas de generación de energía en Nicaragua, sugiere que Nicaragua sería capaz de vender energía a otros países que lo requieran. Zamora indicó que las plantas podrían ser utilizadas para generar energía para la red que se compra por otros países de América Central y por lo tanto puede ser capaz de mantener los generadores trabajando. Sin embargo, si eso no es posible se cerraría.

Turismo Rural
La Asamblea Nacional ha aprobado una nueva ley sobre el desarrollo sostenible de las zonas rurales, que establecerá una nueva Oficina de Turismo Sostenible Rural, como parte de INTUR (Asistencia Técnica al Turismo del Gobierno). Esta oficina trabajará con los municipios, regiones autónomas y comunidades indígenas. Una parte importante de la ley  busca  “el rescate de la identidad cultural” de las zonas rurales y la preservación de la diversidad natural, cultural y biológica. La Comisión fomentará iniciativas económicamente viables y sostenibles y colectivas que promuevan la creación de empleo, así como cumplir con las normas y reglamentos con el fin de atraer la participación del sector privado.

Puerto Seguro
Nicaragua se enorgullece de tener sus puertos marítimos certificados bajo el programa “Safe Harbor” de la Organización Marítima Internacional a través de la renovación de la certificación, como resultado de la inspección de cinco años. Los representantes de la OMI en Nicaragua  luego de inspeccionar el trabajo de las autoridades en la modernización y actualización de los planes de seguridad en los distintos puertos marítimos. Las autoridades portuarias nacionales podrán conducir sus propias inspecciones anuales que contribuyen a la obtención de la certificación OMI de 5 años. La Empresa Portuaria Nacional EPN está trabajando en los planes de seguridad, la capacitación y el intercambio de conocimientos en relación con todos los estándares requeridos.

Viento – San Jorge
Este viento en esta época del año puede causar estragos en el servicio de Ferry a Ometepe y este año se ha visto agravada por una barra de arena que se ha acumulado en el puerto de San Jorge. Los operadores de transbordadores estaban llamando a una de las dragas que trabajan en el río San Juan para ser enviado a San Jorge para hacer frente al problema. Los propietarios de Ferry estaban atrapados también con los costos de los daños a las hélices y los ejes motrices. Confirmaron que la acción urgente por parte de la Autoridad Portuaria (EPN) fue necesaria para mantener el servicio para los visitantes y la población de la Isla de Ometepe.

En la calle otra vez
El 50% de todos los accidentes mortales de tráfico del Departamento de Rivas en lo que va del año fueron en motocicletas. Tanto en las zonas urbanas y rurales, muchos pilotos de motos violan la ley, tales como: no cascos, exceso de pasajeros, alta velocidad y la conducción bajo la influencia del alcohol. Además, muchos no tienen la obtención de licencias, registros y seguros, dice el Jefe interino del Departamento de Rivas, el teniente Justo César Guevara. Agregó que las motos representan más de la mitad del total de vehículos matriculados en el Departamento de Rivas; 10.700 son motocicletas. En 2012, de los 671 accidentes de tránsito en el departamento, 540 fueron accidentes con heridos y 255 fueron en motocicletas. La  Policía de Rivas ha puesto en marcha un programa en el que todos los pilotos que violen las leyes de tránsito y arriesgan sus vidas son invitados a participar en los seminarios que se imparten Rivas por la policía todos los martes a las 2:00 pm.
