Another San Juan ‘Celebrity Sighting’

Canadian actor Justin Chatwin was the latest celebrity to visit San Juan del Sur.  Chatwin is perhaps best known for playing the son of Tom Cruise’s character in the Steven Spielberg movie War of the Worlds.

Chatwin, now 28, began his acting career in television; with roles in ‘Taken’ and the hit TV show ‘Lost’.

After regular TV work throughout the early 2000s, Chatwin gained recognition his supporting role in the summer blockbuster War of the Worlds and followed that with a role in The Invisible and also played ‘Goku’ in Dragonball.

Rivas Police are not showing Rana any “Heart”

Humberto Granados Lugo is the owner and operator of Rana Tours here in San Juan del Sur. In the middle of January this year, his panga (called ‘Corazon’ – Heart in English) was seized by the National Police from Rivas. At the time, five tourists were on board the panga (one of the blue and white fishing boats common to the region) but were not detained. However; the police arrested Granados’ two sons; Norlan Javier y Edwin Antonio. This police action followed a drug bust at the “Río Lago Hotel” in Rivas and the seizure of almost 500 Kilogram cocaine. Police seized his panga and outboard motor under the law relating to property used in connection to drug offences. His sons; Norlan Javier y Edwin Antonio remain charged with handling the drugs here in SJdS. The trial is scheduled for later this month.

Humberto states that the panga was funded by the government of President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro following the tsunami that hit here in September of 1992. He used it as fishing boat until he refurbished it for use as tourist transportation. The modest sized 70 horsepower outboard was obtained with a bank loan.

Granados is demanding the return of the panga and states that his family has always worked in an honest manner. “The whole town knows I work hard” he said. “Look, there’s my transport”, he said as he pointed to his decades old bicycle next to his tiny kiosk in front of Hotel Estrella. Granados also showed Del Sur News a report from the National Police Forensic Unit which stated that the panga had been tested for evidence of drugs and that the test was negative”.

“What can’t they give it back, I am not involved in this and there is no evidence that the panga was either, the test says so” said Granados.

A mediados de enero de este año, su panga (llamada “Corazón”) fue detenida por la Policía Nacional de Rivas. En ese momento, había cinco turistas a bordo de la panga (una de las embarcaciones pesqueras pintadas en azul y blanco, comunes a la región), pero no fueron detenidos. Sin embargo, la policía arrestó a dos de los hijos de Granados; Norlan Javier y Edwin Antonio. Esta acción policial fue seguida de una redada anti-drogas en el “Hotel Río Lago”, localizado carretera a Rivas, y la incautación de casi 500 kilogramos de cocaína. La policía confiscó la panga de Granados y el motor fuera de borda en el marco legal relativo a los bienes utilizados en conexión con delitos de drogas. Sus hijos, Javier y Edwin Norlan Antonio permanecen con los cargos por manejo de drogas en SJdS. El juicio está programado para finales de este mes.

Él la utilizó como embarcación pesquera hasta que la modificó para su uso como transporte turístico. El modesto tamaño de motor fuera de borda 70 caballos de fuerza lo obtuvo con un préstamo bancario.

Granados exige el retorno de su panga y afirma que su familia siempre ha trabajado de manera honesta. “Todo el pueblo sabe que trabajo duro”, dijo. “Mira, ahí está mi transporte”, dijo mientras señalaba su vieja bicicleta de décadas de uso, junto a su pequeño quiosco frente al Hotel Estrella.

Granados también mostró a Noticias Del Sur un informe de la Policía Nacional de la Unidad Forense, en el que se indica que la panga ha sido sometida a pruebas de narcóticos y que los resultados fueron negativos”.

“¿Por qué no me la pueden devolver?- Yo no estoy involucrado en esto y tampoco hay evidencia de que la panga lo esté, la prueba lo dice todo”, dijo Granados.

Body Found in Estuary

The partially clothed body of an unidentified woman was found in the river estuary in San Juan del Sur last Saturday morning. The Rivas Coroner, Luis Ocampo Jara, made an initial assessment that the woman was about 50 years old and that the time of death was between por ahogamiento.

En este momento, la policía ha concluido que la víctima muy probablemente no era de SJdS ya que no había conocimiento de desapariciones y que los lugareños no la reconocieron como local. La occisa era de baja estatura, buena complexión física, con cabello oscuro y tez morena.

El cuerpo ha sido enviado a Managua al IML (Instituto de Medicina Legal). Los científicos forenses tratarán de identificar el cuerpo, así como determinar la causa exacta de la muerte.

Torneo de Surf de “Las Peñitas” Pospuesto hasta nuevo aviso

Javier Baldovinos, Presidente del Circuito Nacional de Surf ha anunciado que, debido a una mala respuesta de los patrocinadores, han tenido que aplazar el primero de los tres eventos previstos, el evento del 24 y el 25 de abril en Las Peñitas en León hasta nuevo aviso.

Los otros dos están previstos para;

• Playa Maderas de San Juan del Sur los días 10 y 11 de julio

Herrera Quits ENACAL

Ruth Herrera, the Head of ENACAL (the Nicaraguan Water & Sewer Company) resigned at the end of last week amid days of rumors and speculation that she would quit or be fired. One of her last official functions was to attend a meeting with the Ministry of Labor (MITRAB) and 35 trade union federations of ENACAL who were demanding the negotiation of new collective agreement.
