Shot During Foiled Robbery

An attempted robbery of a Money changer in Rivas last Saturday morning resulted in a gunfight that injured the intended victim, a bank security guard as well as one of the two armed attackers.

The incident occurred at about 9am on Saturday the 21^st of August as José Ángel Serrano Estrella (45), a Forex Trader, had just left the BDF bank with nearly 200,000 Córdoba’s and was attacked by two bandits. Estrella defended himself by pulling his revolver and the gunfight ensued.  Elvis Antonio Brenes (37), a security guard on duty outside the bank, also fired his weapon at the attackers. As passing shoppers ducked for cover, bullets hit the bank windows and those of a nearby casino. The two attackers fled on a motorcycle but not before one of them according to witnesses) was hit in the stomach by either Estrella or Brenes.

Estrella Serrano was hit three times, in the neck, left arm, and left leg. He was hospitalized but described as not in danger. Ometepe on Display

The Island of Ometepe is holding a tourism fair called ‘Expo Ometepe’ tomorrow and Saturday, 27^th & 28^th of August. Last year, 2009, Ometepe had a record year with 40,000 tourists visiting the twin volcanoes that make up the Island. Already this year, almost 25,000 tourists have visited, an 11% increase. Expo Ometepe will include a celebration of wildlife, art, archaeological, culture and sports as well as 90 exhibitors from the different municipalities on the island as well as from Rivas, Masaya and Granada.

Road Trip Results in Tragedy

Speed, road conditions and possibly alcohol consumption is being blamed for an accident that killed two of five American tourists in one vehicle and injured two Nationals on a Motorcycle on Carretera Masaya at the Tipitapa turn off last Thursday evening.

The truck containing the Americans was northbound when it hit a motorcycle from behind, swerved and crashed into the wall of a house. Transit Police from Masaya say that they found a quantity of empty bottles of liquor in the cab of the truck.

The stretch of road is particularly dark and the lack of lighting was also included by the police as a determining factor in the accident. Accident investigators believe that the driver of the truck did not see the motorcycle and rear ended it. The driver lost control of the vehicle, went off the road, attempted to recover control of the vehicle however failed and then crashed into the wall around the yard of the house. Both persons on the motorbike are recovering in a Masaya hospital.

Military Hospital Expansion

The drawings are complete and work could start by the end of the year on the new Military Hospital in Managua. When finished, the new facility will combine with the existing hospital to provide nearly 500 beds to patients on the basis of 75% INESS (Social Security) clients and 25% military personnel. Construction is expected to take between 24 and 30 months. Financing (66 Million Córdoba’s) is through the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE).

Police to Receive “Street” Grant

The National Police of Nicaragua will be included in the US State Department program known as CARSI (Central America Regional Security Initiative). The program, with an objective to “Return the streets to the people” deals with youth violence and drug abuse. According to the Chief of Police, Aminta Granera, Nicaragua will receive a grant of US$ 1.5 Million from the program.

La Isla de Ometepe celebra una feria de turismo denominada “Expo Ometepe mañana (viernes) y el sábado, 27 y 28 de agosto. El año pasado, 2009, Ometepe tuvo un año récord con 40.000 turistas que visitaron los volcanes gemelos que conforman la isla. Ya este año, casi 25,000 turistas la han visitado, lo que se traduce en un aumento del 11%. Expo Ometepe incluirá una celebración de la fauna, arte, arqueología, cultura y deportes, así como 90 expositores  de los diferentes municipios de la isla, así como de Rivas, Masaya y Granada.

Viaje en carretera resulta en tragedia.

Quizá la velocidad, las condiciones del camino y, posiblemente, el consumo de alcohol sean los responsables Tránsito de Masaya dicen que encontró una cantidad de botellas vacías de licor en la cabina de la camioneta.

El tramo de dicha carretera es muy oscuro y la falta de iluminación también fue incluida por la policía como un factor determinante en el accidente. Los investigadores de accidentes creen que el conductor de la camioneta no vio la motocicleta y literalmente se pasó llevando a los motorizados. El conductor perdió el control del vehículo, salió de la carretera, intentó recuperar el control del vehículo sin embargo no pudo y luego se estrelló contra un muro en el patio de la casa. En tanto los motociclistas se están recuperando en un hospital de Masaya.

Ampliación del Hospital Militar

Los planos han sido completados y los trabajos podrían comenzar a finales de este año en el nuevo Hospital Militar de Managua. Cuando haya sido terminado, las nuevas instalaciones se combinarán con el hospital existente para proveer cerca de 500 camas a los pacientes, sobre una base del 75% pacientes asegurados del INSS (seguro social) y el restante 25% el personal militar. La construcción se espera que tenga entre 24 y 30 meses. El financiamiento (66 millones de córdobas) llega a través del Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE).

Policía Nacional de Nicaragua recibirá subvención.

La Policía Nacional de Nicaragua será incluida en el programa del Departamento de Estado de los EE.UU. conocido como CARSI por sus siglas en inglés (Central America Regional Security Initiative- Iniciativa de Seguridad Regional para América Central). El programa, cuyo  objetivo es el de “Devolver las calles a la gente” se enfoca en la violencia juvenil y el abuso de drogas. De acuerdo con la Jefe de la Policía Nacional, Comisionada Aminta Granera, Nicaragua recibirá una subvención de 1,5 millones de dólares de los EE.UU. para este programa.
