Efrain Rios Montt, the 86 year old Ex-General and Guatemala’s former military leader was sentenced to a total of 80 years in prison last week after being found guilty of genocide (50 years) and crimes against humanity (30 years). Rios Montt was convicted of ordering the deaths of 1,771 people of the Ixil Maya ethnic group during his time in office in 1982 and 1983. The civil war had claimed the lives of 200,000 people before The Guatemalan Peace Accords were signed in 1996. In presenting their case, prosecutors said Rios Montt presided over the war’s bloodiest phase. They said Rios Montt turned a blind eye as soldiers used rape, torture and arson against those suspected of supporting leftist rebels. Judge Jazmin Barrios said that as de facto president it was logical that Rios Montt knew of what was happening in the country, but did nothing to stop it. “The Ixils were considered public enemies of the state and were also victims of racism, considered an inferior race,” Judge Barrios said. She added “The violent acts against the Ixils were not spontaneous. They were planned beforehand.” The trial has been plagued with postponements, legal arguments and even a temporary suspension.

The Apostle Convention entered into force on May 14th and eliminates the consular authentication process for certain documents. As of the 14th of May, public documents issued by duly authorized public officials (because of their office and jurisdiction) may be annotated by the General Consulate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Apostle Authority), to take effect abroad but only between countries that are part of the Apostle Convention. This means that anyone applying for residency will not have to have documents authenticated by the Nicaraguan Consul in their country of origin.

INSS Reform “Off the Table” – Any changes will have to wait until next year as government, business, workers and unions cannot agree on the best way to fix the Social Security system. Unions say that administration costs are too high and that annual savings of 6% or 7% could be made. The government believes that they have enough contributions to be able to delay making any changes this year. With only about 650,000 members out of a total workforce of 3.2 million (2.4 of whom are working in the informal sector) there is a huge potential to increase revenue through monthly contributions.

The Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas (HMVP) in Managua has begun the process of training health care administrators in the region through the Central American Institute of Business Administration (INCAE). HMVP is accredited by the Joint Commission International and other centers expressed an interest in finding out what they do differently. At their first meeting in Managua, the group were told that HMVP has a strong set of goals that the organization follows. As key personnel may change from time to time, the goals of the organization are always followed.

The Nicaraguan Tourism Institute (INTUR as it’s known by its acronym in Spanish) has now activated the no charge hotline for emergency response. Mayra Salina, Minister of Tourism introduced the program last week and announced that the number 101 has been allocated by Claro as number for domestic and foreign tourists to call in an emergency or when they require police assistance. This public private partnership of INTUR, The National Police and the telephone company Claro is aimed at offering increased safety and security to tourists from all over the region and the world, many of whom are used to picking up the phone and dialing an emergency service. The police have 16 officers that have been trained in English that will man the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

On Thursday the 9th of May 2013, the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Commission of Nicaragua declared the contest between Ricardo Mayorga and Wesley Tiffer void. They confirmed that Mayorga had struck Tiffer with an illegal knee to the back at the end of the second round. In addition, they admitted to making an error in allowing Mayorga to fight as he was 21 pounds over the weight but handed Mayorga a three month ban for the weight infraction anyway. Efraín Ríos Montt, de 86 años de edad, ex general y ex jefe militar de Guatemala fue condenado a un total de 80 años de prisión la semana pasada tras ser declarado culpable de genocidio (50 años) y los crímenes de lesa humanidad (30 años). Ríos Montt fue declarado culpable de ordenar la muerte de 1.771 personas de la etnia Maya Ixil durante su tiempo en el cargo en 1982 y 1983. La guerra civil se había cobrado la vida de 200.000 personas antes de que se firmaran los Acuerdos de Paz de Guatemala en 1996. En la presentación de su caso, los fiscales dijeron que Ríos Montt presidió la fase más sangrienta de la guerra. Dijeron, Ríos Montt se hizo de la vista gorda mientras los soldados utilizan la violación, la tortura y los incendios provocados contra los sospechosos de apoyar a los rebeldes izquierdistas. La Juez Jazmín Barrios dijo que como presidente de facto era lógico que Ríos Montt, sabía de lo que estaba sucediendo en el país, pero no hizo nada para detenerlo. “Los ixiles eran considerados enemigos públicos del Estado y también fueron víctimas de racismo, considerados una raza inferior”, dijo la juez Barrios. Ella agregó: “Los actos de violencia contra los ixiles no fueron espontáneos. Estos fueron planeados de antemano. “El juicio ha estado plagado de postergaciones, argumentos legales y hasta una suspensión temporal.

La Convención Apóstol entró en vigor el 14 de mayo y elimina el proceso de autenticación consular para determinados documentos. A partir del 14 de mayo, los documentos públicos expedidos por funcionarios públicos debidamente autorizados (por su oficina y jurisdicción) puede ser anotado por el Consulado General del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Autoridad Apóstol), con efectos en el extranjero, pero sólo entre los países que son parte de la Convención Apóstol. Esto significa que las personas que solicitan la residencia no tendrán que tener los documentos autenticados por el Cónsul de Nicaragua en su país de origen.

Reforma del INSS “fuera de la mesa” – Cualquier cambio tendrá que esperar hasta el próximo año como el gobierno, las empresas, los trabajadores y los sindicatos no pueden ponerse de acuerdo sobre la mejor manera de arreglar el sistema de Seguridad Social. Los sindicatos dicen que los costos de administración son demasiado altos y que los ahorros anuales podrían ser de 6% o 7%. El gobierno cree que tiene suficientes contribuciones para ser capaz de retrasar de realizar cualquier cambio este año. Con sólo alrededor de 650.000 miembros de una población activa total de 3,2 millones de euros (2,4 de los cuales trabajan en el sector informal), hay un enorme potencial para aumentar los ingresos a través de contribuciones mensuales.

Mayra Salina, Ministro de Turismo presentó el programa de la semana pasada y anunció que el número 101 ha sido asignado por Claro como el número de turistas nacionales y extranjeros para llamar en caso de emergencia o cuando se requiere ayuda de la policía. Esta es una asociación público-privada de INTUR, la Policía Nacional y de la compañía telefónica Claro, está dirigido a ofrecer mayor seguridad y protección a los turistas de todas partes de la región y el mundo, muchos de los cuales se utilizan para levantar el teléfono y marcar un servicio de emergencia. La policía tiene 16 oficiales que han sido capacitados en inglés que manejarán el teléfono las 24 horas del día, siete días a la semana.

El jueves 9 de mayo de 2013, la Comisión de Nicaragua de Artes Marciales Mixtas (MMA) declaró nula la contienda entre Ricardo Mayorga y Wesley Tiffer. Confirmaron que Mayorga había golpeado a Tiffer con un rodillazo ilegal en la espalda al final de la segunda ronda. Además, admitieron que cometieron un error en permitir que Mayorga luchara con 21 libras más por encima del peso, pero entregaron a Mayorga una prohibición de tres meses por la infracción del peso de todos modos. Mayorga dijo que apelaría la decisión.

On May 10th, the Municipal Government of San Juan del Sur relaunched the city as a tourist destination with an identity of history, tradition and culture with the purpose of developing the potential historical, traditional and cultural in the city and including them in the tourism generated by the sun and the beach. The Inauguration was held at the new “Plaza de las Artes” in front of the bay.

Mayor Dr. Rosa Elena Bello, said: “The relaunch of the city is based on identity, culture and history of the exploits of the; Southern Front, Benjamin Zeledon, the path of the old railway, the indigenous cemeteries of Ostional, the bridges of the transit route (gold rush), the houses of that time that still remain and the Fortaleza del Vigia (William Walker). We celebrate the culture of San Juan Bautista, town patron and our Virgen del Carmen, patroness of fishermen. These are the essence and identity of San Juan del Sur along with the friendliness that characterizes us all”.

Vice Mayor, Randall Granja said “The observance of the Municipal Tourism Plan will be possible with the participation of different public and private groups from the Cabinets of Alliances and the businesses, hotels and restaurants that satisfy the needs of the tourists and the population by welcoming and caring for the tourists making their contribution at different times of the year”.

He added, “It will value the first urban village streets that make it unique, simple and authentic and the elevation of the historic center of town that we characterize as historical, cultural and a tourist center.

Luis Miguel Olivares (Head of the Office of Cultural and Historical Heritage) gave a brief review of the history of historical sites of the town, the Fortaleza del Vigia, built in 1856 by William Walker, the Cabotaje Lighthouse built in 1930 and the water tank that supplied the railway route from San Jorge to San Juan del Sur.

The events were held over the 10th, 11th and 12th of May, with activities like mini trade fairs, cultural expressions by local artists, tours, cleaning and the declaration and unveiling of signage at the historical sites by local authorities and tourism operators.

El pasado 10 de mayo la alcaldía municipal de San Juan del Sur realizo el Relanzamiento de la ciudad como destino turístico desde la identidad historia, tradición y la cultura, con el objetivo de la puesta en valor de los potenciales históricos, tradicionales y culturales que posee el pueblo y agregarlos a la oferta turística de sol y playa, se  inauguró en la Plaza de las  Artes frente a la bahía.

La Alcaldesa Dra. Rosa Elena  Bello, dijo: “El relanzamiento de la ciudad se basa en la identidad, la cultura y la historia de las hazañas del frente Sur  “Benjamín Zeledón”, de la Ruta del antiguo Ferrocarril, los cementerios indígenas de Ostional, los puentes de la Ruta del Tránsito y las casas de la época que aún se conservan, la Fortaleza del Vigía, nuestra cultura de celebrar a San Juan Bautista patrono del municipio ,y a Nuestra Virgen del Carmen patrona de los pescadores, que son la esencia de la identidad sanjuaneña, además de la amabilidad que nos caracteriza”.

Randall Granja, Vice Alcalde, dijo;
“El cumplimiento del plan municipal de turismo, será posible con la participación de los diferentes actores privados y públicos desde el gabinete de alianzas, los empresarios de hoteles y restaurantes que hacen que los turistas se sientan satisfechos, además con de  la población  que con su acogida y atención a turistas hace su aporte en diferentes épocas del año.”

Agrego; “Se pondrá en valor el caso urbano de las primeras calles del pueblo que hacen que sea único, sencillo y auténtico,  el levantamiento del estado actual y preservación del casco histórico del pueblo que nos caracteriza como centro histórico, cultural y turístico.”

Luis Miguel Olivares, responsable  de la Oficina  de Patrimonio  Histórico y Cultural, realizo una breve reseña sobre la historia de sitios  históricos del municipio; la Fortaleza del Vigía, construida  en 1856 por William Walker, el Faro  de Cabotaje  construido  en 1930 y el tanque  de abastecimiento  de agua  al ferrocarril de San Jorge a San Juan del Sur.

El evento se desarrolló el 10,11 y 12 de mayo, con actividades como, mini ferias turísticas, expresiones culturales por artistas locales, recorridos, limpieza y declaratorias en los sitios históricos por las autoridades municipales y empresarios turísticos.

The fledgling 25-member San Juan del Sur Rotary Club was officially accepted as a Rotary chapter by Rotary International at a May 5 ceremony. Rotary’s District Governor, Rodrigo A. Teran, and his wife Sheila, traveled to Nicaragua from Panama to inaugurate two new Nicaragua chapters, the SJDS chapter and one in Ciudad Sandino near Managua.

Five members of the local club—Luis Contreras, president; Heidy Herrera Obando, secretary; Jane Mirandette, treasurer; Edwin Vasquez; and Roxanna Vasquez—traveled to Ciudad Sandino for the May 4 inauguration dinner for that club, meeting the Terrans and members of the Ciudad Sandino chapter and of the Minnesota district. According to Mirandette, the two new chapters are similar in that about a third of the members are expatriates interested in providing service to the community. Members of the Padrino Club in Granada, which has worked with the San Juan chapter, also attended. “The District Governor of 5960 from Minnesota and a group from one of the Minnesota clubs were in Nicaragua especially to participate in the inauguration, as a support club,” Mirandette said. The Minnesota district governor gave a speech welcoming the two clubs and handed out club flags to the various leaders.

The next day, the Terans from Panama, along with five members of the Granada chapter, arrived in San Juan del Sur. In a morning ceremony, Terran signed the paperwork to accept the SJDS chapter. The SJDS members and Granada chapter representatives showed off the renovations to the front of the building and the repaired and painted roof the two clubs had done together at Casa Integral, the local cultural center, and then guests and local members attended a luncheon at Villa Isabella. 

The SJDS Rotary Club has also completed the last school repair and rehab work begun in February in conjunction with Gillette, Wyoming Rotary Clubs. That work at the Rubio Mongalo School included repairing and painting an auditorium/classroom, installing four ceiling fans in the room, polishing the floors, and delivering 6 tables and 36 chairs. Two Gillette clubs, along with another chapter in Woodstock, Vermont, have been active in the SJDS area for years and encouraged a local group of both nationals and foreigners to form their own club.

Rotario San Juan del Sur

El Club Rotario novato de 25 miembros en San Juan del Sur, fue aceptado oficialmente como un capítulo Rotario de Rotarios International en una ceremonia del 5 de mayo. El Gobernador de Distrito de Rotarios, Rodrigo A. Teran, y su esposa Sheila, viajó a Nicaragua desde Panamá a inaugurar dos nuevos capítulos de Nicaragua, el capítulo SJDS y uno en Ciudad Sandino, cerca de Managua.

Cinco miembros del club local, Luis Contreras, presidente; Heidy Herrera Obando, secretario; Jane Mirandette, tesorero, Edwin Vásquez, y Roxanna Vásquez, viajaron a Ciudad Sandino el 04 de mayo para la cena de inauguración de ese club, para reunirse con los Terran y los miembros del capítulo de Ciudad Sandino y del distrito de Minnesota.

Según Mirandette, los dos nuevos capítulos son similares en que alrededor de un tercio de los miembros son extranjeros interesados ??en la prestación de servicio a la comunidad. También asistieron miembros del Club Padrino de Granada, que ha trabajado con el capítulo de San Juan del Sur. “El gobernador de distrito de 5960 de Minnesota y un grupo de uno de los clubes de Minnesota estuvieron en Nicaragua, especialmente para participar en la inauguración, como un club de apoyo”, dijo Mirandette. El gobernador de Minnesota dio un discurso de bienvenida a los dos clubes y repartió banderas del club a los diferentes líderes.

Al día siguiente, los Terans de Panamá, junto con cinco miembros del capítulo de Granada, llegó a San Juan del Sur. En una ceremonia de la mañana, Terran firmó los papeles para aceptar el capítulo de SJDS. Los miembros de SJDS y representantes del capítulo de Granada mostraron  las reformas a la parte delantera del edificio y el techo reparado y pintado, que los dos clubes habían hecho juntos en la Casa Integral, el centro cultural local y, a continuación, los invitados y miembros locales asistieron a un almuerzo en Villa Isabela.

El Club Rotario de SJDS también ha completado la última reparación de la escuela y el trabajo de rehabilitación que comenzó en febrero en relación con Gillette, Wyoming clubes rotarios. Ometepe Island – Tourism businesses are getting frustrated at the constant power black outs on the island that are causing loss of revenue as well as giving the island a bad reputation amongst the tourists. The island has its own electricity generating company called Ometepe Electricity Generating Company (EGOMSA by its acronym in Spanish) who acknowledged that three generators are out of action but had sent for one new unit to solve the problem. At full capacity they can produce about 2.5 megawatts at peak hours, easily enough to cover the 1.5 megawatt requirements. The overworked repair team covers well over 200 kilometers of electrical grid on an island that is difficult to navigate. The problem has found its way to the National Assembly and the desk of Deputado Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Barrios (President of the Tourism Commission of the Assembly) who was outraged that the tourist sector is being subjected to an unstable energy system. Chamorro is a proponent of connecting the island to the national grid by way of an underground cable (which would also be able to put (wind) energy created on the island back into the grid); however, that is still 18 months to 2 years

Colón to Cardenas – As the construction of the tarmacadam road linking Colón with Cardenas continues, the new bus has already begun serving the population. FOMAV (the road maintenance fund) is managing the 38 kilometers of road and the last two bridges at Cañas and Colón (out of a total of eight bridges along the new stretch). The route follows the bottom of Lake Nicaragua through the Municipality of Cardenas, in the Department of Rivas.  A total of 150 million Córdobas have been invested over the last 4 years in order to link the two towns.  The bus charges 80 Córdobas for the round trip and takes about 90 minutes each way.

The Old Masaya Railway Station – The renovations are well under way and soon this building will be the central point of a new tourist route, showing off the building in all its former glory. Following this first phase, the ‘Plaza de la Cultura’ will be added and then fixtures, kiosks and parking areas.    A team of 30 young workers from theWorkshop School of Masaya have been working on the roof structure. The project is part of the plan to rescue tourist and public spaces and is being driven by the city. The idea is to try and preserve as much of the original look of the station that for many years was a trading and transportation point. The Masaya Railway Station was built in 1926 and is located in the northern sector of the city.

Masaya Judge Dismissed – The Supreme Court has dismissed Masaya Civil District Judge Ernesto José Medina Velásquez for corruption after analyzing 14 serious complaints from citizens between October 2011 and November of last year. Allegations included abuse of status, indecent proposals and illicit enrichment. The victims were from a broad spectrum of social and professional backgrounds. At least one of the complainants had made a criminal charge against Medina Velásquez. Last week, Judge Rubén Arias Bello was sworn in and together with his staff, immediately began the task of performing a complete inventory of all files and records in the district office.

Last Cruise Ship of the Season – Last Thursday, the Holland America MS Amsterdam pulled into Puerto Corinto and took the honors of closing out the Nicaraguan cruise ship schedule for 2012/2013. San Juan del Sur had it last ship on the 29th of March. The total for the season was 8 ships for Corinto and 27 for San Juan del Sur. The Amsterdam docked in Puerto Corinto with 1,329 passengers out of a maximum capacity of 1,380 and had a crew of 601 aboard. Passengers disembarking were treated to the usual festive atmosphere with marimbas, guitars and dance performances. INTUR, the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute estimates that over 60,000 cruise ship passengers visited Nicaragua this season.

 NOTICIAS REGIONALES BREVES

Isla de Ometepe – Las empresas de turismo están frustradas por los constantes apagones de las fuentes de electricidad en la isla que están causando pérdida de ingresos, así como dan a la isla una mala reputación entre los turistas. La isla tiene su propia compañía de generación de energía eléctrica denominada Ometepe Generating Electricity Company (EGOMSA por sus siglas en español), quienes reconocieron que tres generadores están fuera de acción, pero habían enviado  una nueva unidad para resolver el problema. A plena capacidad, pueden producir alrededor de 2,5 megavatios en las horas pico, más que suficientes para cubrir los requerimientos de 1,5 megavatios. El equipo de reparación cubre con exceso de trabajo, más de 200 kilómetros de red eléctrica en una isla que es difícil de navegar. El problema se ha trasladado a la Asamblea Nacional y a la oficina del Diputado Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Barrios (Presidente de la Comisión de Turismo de la Asamblea) que estaba indignado de que el sector turístico está siendo sometido a un sistema de energía inestable. Chamorro es un defensor de la conexión de la isla a la red nacional a través de un cable subterráneo (que también podría producir energía (de viento) creada en la isla), sin embargo, continua el problema aun de 18 meses a 2 años.

Colón de Cárdenas – A medida que la construcción de la carretera asfaltada que une Colón con Cárdenas continúa, el nuevo autobús ya ha comenzado a servir a la población. FOMAV (el fondo de mantenimiento de carreteras) está gestionando  los 38 kilómetros de carretera y los dos últimos puentes de Cañas y Colón (de un total de ocho puentes en la nueva ampliación). La ruta sigue el fondo del Lago Nicaragua a través del Municipio de Cárdenas, en el departamento de Rivas. Un total de 150 millones de córdobas se han invertido en los últimos 4 años con el fin de unir las dos ciudades. El bus cobra 80 córdobas para ida y vuelta y tarda unos 90 minutos en cada sentido.

La antigua estación de tren de Masaya – Las renovaciones están en marcha y pronto este edificio será el punto central de una nueva ruta turística, mostrando el edificio en todo su esplendor. Tras esta primera fase, se añade la “Plaza de la Cultura accesorios, kioscos y áreas de estacionamiento. Un equipo de 30 jóvenes trabajadores de la Escuela Taller de Masaya han estado trabajando en la estructura del techo. El proyecto forma parte del plan de rescate de turistas y los espacios públicos y está siendo impulsado por la ciudad. La idea es tratar de preservar la mayor cantidad del aspecto original de la estación que durante muchos años fue un punto de comercio y transporte. La estación de tren de Masaya fue construida en 1926 y está situada en el sector norte de la ciudad.

Masaya juez desestimó – El Tribunal Supremo ha desestimado el Juez de Distrito Civil de Masaya Ernesto José Medina Velásquez por corrupción después de analizar 14 denuncias graves de los ciudadanos entre octubre de 2011 y noviembre del año pasado. El último Cruceros de la Temporada  – El jueves pasado, el Holland América MS Ámsterdam, se  detuvo en Puerto Corinto y se llevó los honores de cerrar el programa de cruceros de Nicaragua para 2012/2013. San Juan del Sur tuvo el último barco el 29 de marzo. El total de la temporada fue de 8 barcos de Corinto y 27 de San Juan del Sur. El Ámsterdam atracó en Puerto Corinto con 1.329 pasajeros fuera de una capacidad máxima de 1380 y tenía una tripulación de 601 a bordo. Pasajeros desembarcando fueron tratados con el ambiente festivo de costumbre con marimbas, guitarras y espectáculos de danza. INTUR, el Instituto Nicaragüense de Turismo estima que más de 60.000 pasajeros de cruceros visitaron Nicaragua en esta temporada.

On May 8th, a fair was held for pregnant and breastfeeding women in the El Bastón area of Staff of San Juan del Sur. The aim of this fair is to bring together pregnant women and give them a talk and offer tips on the importance of breastfeeding their babies and on a healthy, balanced diet.

María del Socorro Espinoza López, Nursing Manager, said that in the health post at El Bastón they have 3-4 pregnant mothers who meet every month and the citizen power cabinets coordinate the distribution of the information for new pregnancies in the community. The mothers to be were visited at home and given basic care as well as monitored prevent complicated diseases. They are given talks about the importance of giving only breast milk as it is the healthiest food for the baby.

Juana del Carmen, pregnant, said that she receives care each month and is checked for blood pressure, weight and size of the baby. She said the Doctor asks about physical and emotional condition and she gets her immunizations, prenatal vitamins, calcium, iron and folic acid.

Besides the work of this unit, the health post serves regular patients with vaccinations, those with chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes & hypertension) and also talks are given on educational talks and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases as well as family planning (condoms, IUD and pills ) and also perform pap tests.

The program, “Love for the very little ones” includes the distribution of a booklet that serves to monitor the baby’s psychomotor development, nutritional status, vaccination schedules and supplements. It monitors malnutrition and overweight patients giving talks and advice to mothers about the importance of a balanced diet. Dr. Bernardo Rodríguez is the practitioner who gives the medical consultations and dental care each month at the recently built clinic and waiting room annex to the health post in the community of El Bastón.

Feria de la embarazada y lactancia materna en el Bastón

El pasado 8 de mayo se realizo la feria de la embarazada y la lactancia materna en el puesto de salud del Bastón comunidad de San Juan del Sur, el objetivo de esta feria es reunir a las mujeres embarazadas y darles una charla y consejos sobre la importancia de amamantar a su bebé y sobre una alimentación saludable y balanceada.

María del Socorro Espinoza López, responsable de enfermería expreso que en el puesto de Salud del Bastón, se atiende cada mes de 3 a 4 nuevas embarazadas, se coordina con los gabinetes del poder ciudadano la información a cerca de una nueva embarazada en la comunidad, se visita en su casa y se le realiza la atención básica, las embarazadas reciben seguimiento para evitar enfermedades complicadas en su estado, se les imparten charlas a cerca de la importancia de dar como alimento exclusivo la leche materna que es el alimento más saludable para el bebé.

Juana del Carmen embarazada expresa que recibe atención cada mes es revisada su presión arterial, el peso y tamaño del embarazo, el médico pregunta a cerca de su estado físico y emocional, recibe vacunas, vitaminas prenatales, calcio, hierro y acido fólico.

Además el puesto de salud del Bastón atiende a pacientes de forma integral, con vacunas, enfermedades crónicas, (diabéticos, hipertensos) se imparten charlas educativas y de prevención de enfermedades de transmisión sexual y sobre métodos de planificación (preservativos, T de cobre y pastillas) y se realizan Papanicolaou.

Se ejecuta el programa “Amor para los mas chiquitos”, comprende la distribución de una cartilla que sirve para dar seguimiento en el desarrollo sicomotor del bebe, estado nutricional, esquemas de vacunación, suplemento de vitaminas A y sulfato ferroso. Se vigila la desnutrición y el sobrepeso dando seguimiento a cada caso dando charlas y consejos a las madres sobre la importancia de una alimentación balanceada.

El Dr. Bernardo Rodríguez es el médico general que atiende las consultas medicas, ademas hay atención odontológica cada mes, recientemente se ha construido una clínica y una sala de espera,  anexo del puesto de salud en la comunidad El Bastón.

On May 10th, a delegation of three members of the departmental Federation of People with Disabilities (FECONORI by its acronym in Spanish) made a formal request to the city council offices in San Juan del Sur for funding from the municipal budget for the organization under Law 763.

Azucena Salgado (FECONORI coordinator), said that under Article 88 of Law 763, local government is mandated to provide a budget for the protection of the disabled and a budget for the promotion of organizations working for the benefit of the disabled.

Salgado said the township has 66 disabled persons organized in three associations. The municipal council decided to take the proposal to the commission before giving a response to the delegate from FECONORI.

Una delegación de tres miembros de la Federación departamental de personas con discapacitadas FECONORI el 10 de mayo se presentó a las oficinas del consejo municipal de San Juan del Sur, con el objetivo de solicitar presupuesto municipal para la organización en base a la ley 763.

Azucena Salgado, coordinadora de FECONORI,  dijo que la ley 763 mandata a las alcaldías en el artículo 88 otorgar presupuesto para la protección de los discapacitados, los gobiernos locales están obligados a establecer un presupuesto para el impulso de organizaciones que trabajan en beneficio de los discapacitados.

Salgado, indicó que el municipio tiene 66 discapacitados organizados en tres asociaciones, los concejales del municipio resolvieron llevar la propuesta de la a comisión para posteriormente dar una respuesta a FECONORI.

Below is an invitation from Randall Granja, Vice Mayor, to participate in a new initiative to bring tourism to San Juan del Sur. This is a weekend event. Friday afternoon and evening there will be an explanation of the Master Plan, you can participate with a booth to display your products and services in a mini-fair, listen to folkloric music and dance.

On Saturday there’s a clean-up morning of the area from the Mayor’s office to the railroad tank (the North Road).

On Sunday there’s a clean-up morning from the fish market at the bottom of the hill up to the Fort (a guided tour of the fort will be given when you reach it). The hope is to involve the International Community in this first event and to continue working together to improve things so that San Juan del Sur can be a sustainable and attractive tourist destination.

Dear International Tourist Entrepreneurs, Business Owners and Citizens

On May 10, 2013, there will be a presentation of the ongoing and future work for the re-launching of San Juan del Sur as a tourist destination, based on its identity, history, traditions and culture.

We have designed a program of activities (attached) for the weekend, including a small tourism fair aimed at San Juan del Sur residents and also tourists who visit us to know more about our services and offers.

We do not have many tents, so we are inviting investors and business people to call us if you need one to set up a booth for your products and services (first-come, first-served basis).  We will supply the awning and with your creativity and ingenuity, you can design and build an attractive booth to generate interest in your business/restaurant/service, etc. We are taking all possible steps to ensure local and national media coverage. Please call us if you would like to participate and have a booth.

As you can see in the attached program, the event will begin the afternoon of May 10. On May 11 there will be a planned cleanup day from the entrance of the Mayor’s office to the railroad tank. On May 12 we will clean the area from the Fish Market to the Fort. We are asking your support on these days. Join us in this journey and volunteer to help with the garbage collection on the North Road.

En el marco del fortalecimiento de San Juan del Sur como destino turístico se estará realizando el Relanzamiento  de la ciudad desde la  identidad, cultura y tradición el día 10 de mayo del 2013  en la Plaza de las Artes.

El objetivo de este plan es la puesta en valor y proyección de todas las actividades religiosas culturales,  sitios históricos  y fechas célebres que por su valor histórico son imborrables especialmente para los sanjuaneños.  Esto provocará correlacionar lo ya posicionado en sol y playa con atractivos históricos culturales con la identidad local lo que enriquecerá y diversificará el producto dando como resultado mayores noches de estancia que redundará en mejoría económica.
