Garbage Collection in San Juan de Sur

Summary of Municipal Breves

In San Juan del Sur, the services of collection transfer and separation of solid waste (garbage) is provided by the municipality. Here are some facts:

The Landfill is the final disposal site of all waste generated by the urban population of the municipality. It is located 5 kilometers north of the city on a 3 acre site.

TRENCH – The trench is where all the trash transported to the dump is finally buried. The trenches are 40 meters long, 20 meters wide and 6 meters deep.

· COLLECTION
· TRANSFER
· SEPARATION

To get the trash to the landfill, there is a three step process:

1. Collection: Municipal workers go house to house and business to business as well as the picking up at the barrels in public places. We have 3 trucks for garbage collection service.

2. Transfer: These 3 trucks transfer garbage collected from each of the different barrios or sectors (15 in total) to the final disposal site.

3. Separation: In SJdS, currently there is no system of collecting separated waste at the consumer end. The municipality separates the waste at the landfill where workers separate mainly plastic and glass.

The Separators
Four employees pick out the water bottles, plastic, and other plastic waste. This is compacted, packaged and stored. It is weighed and then sold to a national company. Revenues from the sales are deposited into the bank account of the recycling project. These funds are then used to improve this public service. (Auto Sustainable)

DID YOU KNOW?

45 CUBIC METERS or 13.5 TONS OF WASTE

IS TAKEN TO THE LANDFILL EVERY DAY!

The municipal government is currently conducting maintenance (value 400,000 Córdobas) to the landfill, cleaning debris, improving access for trucks and also making good the road. With proper maintenance, treatment and operation of the sanitary trenches, and with the financial contribution of each tax/fee payer, it is estimated that the municipal landfill will operate (life time) for approximately 20 years approx. The site was designed to have 8 trenches and has only used 3 since this landfill was started (in 1992).

We take this opportunity to remind you not to put you’re your home of business garbage out at night because dogs and feral cats spread it around the neighborhood. Secure it for the morning when the trucks collect it.
