City Hall was “Shaking†as the Miss Nicaragua Candidates met with the Mayor, Vice Mayor and City Officials in SJdS last Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey officially recorded the mild earthquake a Magnitude 5.1 (on the Richter scale) on Friday January 21st at 11:18:19 AM SJdS time. The under ocean location was at a depth of 81.1 kilometers and was 50 km south west of Granada and 50 km west north west of Rivas. It was enough to cause everyone to take the precaution of going outside of the building and that made for a good photo opportunity.
Roof dog was in the street at the time and can report that he would not have known anything had the 3 people on the step of Sylvia Sanchez not stood up and told him what was going on. The average announcement from the passing special event truck causes more of a shaker.
A more obvious result of the shaker was that Movistar cell phone service was jammed up for over an hour as users called their families and friends causing the network to be saturated. Teenagers were showing signs of anxiety but fingers and thumbs were glad of the break from their usual high speed text messaging.
The buzz on the street is that the multi storey twin tower project ‘Las Tablas’ is a ‘Go’ and pre-selling will start soon. As you face it, the left had tower will sit on the old Police Station lot and the right had tower will be on the large lot across the street (that leads up into Barrio Planta). Plans show a covered parking level, nine floors of condominiums and a roof terrace. The building will be a joint project of the ISSDHU (Institute of Social Security and Human Development) and Policia Nacional Inversiones y Desorollos de Negocios S.A. This is similar to the Army Pension fund that built La Talanguera at the north end of the beach.
