Roof Dog – Somethings’s Burning; The seemingly constant garbage burning at the Municipal Garbage Dump (El Basurero) got out of control last Saturday March 4th as the high winds picked up pieces of burning garbage and spread them to the neighboring private nature reserve called “El Toro Mixcal”. Local help worked with the local Volunteer Fire Department from 1pm to 7pm to control the spread. They were back again later that and made sure houses were not in danger. As a safety precaution, one family living in a caretaker cottage was evacuated to a safe house. The owner of the nature reserve has made a significant effort to protect the property from the burning garbage. This includes a fire break and the planting of various cacti, shrubs and trees to trap the garbage blowing onto their land. A big thanks to Alfonso Garcia and his volunteer firemen who work tirelessly and with little support to keep us safe.
