A Three Way Move – or a ‘trifecta’ of bar/restaurant relocations that’s been weeks in the making. Here’s the deal; Arribas is moving into the old Pau Hana space. Dorado’s is going into the old Arribas and El Lucero (them Texas boys) are taking the old Dorado’s. The Black Whale is a bridesmaid this round but hey, this is San Juan del Sur, wait a while! Dorado’s new logo shows a sports bar theme and El Lucero will be “Bringing back the biscuits” and other Texas style favorites as well as music, dancing etc.

Pan De Vida – This Saturday 5^th May is the Grand Opening of the new Aqua location next to Play Gigante in Tola. The fun starts at 2pm and is $20 at the door.

Transport Gaby (Richard Morales) – invites you to check out his new INTUR approved office space in front of Villa Isabella. You can also visit Harry from SJdS Property Management at the same time.

The Biblical sounding “El Shaddai Beauty and Spa” – has moved from Las Delicias to the old Union Fenosa office in the street on the way to the Uno gas station.

Ducks Surf Shop – is now open and will have a grand opening early June. Mike Duckworth (I get the Ducks now?) is the owner and has purchase Aussie Joey’s panga and all the gear and added the store front location 20 meters south of Barrio Cafe to complete the full service shop. Ducks provides Surf, fishing and spearfishing tours to all the major locations up and down the coast from SJdS. They will also be the official Quiksilver and Roxy clothing dealers for the town. Mike is also looking at community projects and intends supporting local kids with some interesting and creative new ideas.

The Souvenir Shop – that was across from Barrio Café is now in the street that runs between Aurora and Iskra Travel.

Big Wave Dave is still holding out – with the regular Saturday morning Farmers Market from 9:30 to 12 Noon. He is closed the rest of the week.

El Perrito de la Azotea

Un triple movimiento – o un desfile de mudanzas de bares/restaurantes ha tomado lugar esta de semana. La situación es la siguiente: Arribas Bar se muda al antiguo local de Pau Hana. Dorado se muda adonde fue Arribas y El Lucero (los chicos de Texas) van a tomar el antiguo local de Dorado. El nuevo logo de Dorado muestra un tema de bar de deportes y El Lucero “viene de nuevo las galletas” y otras especialidades de estilo texano, así como la música, el baile, etc.

Pan De Vida – Este sábado 05 de mayo es la inauguración del nuevo local, Aqua, al lado de Playa Gigante en Tola. La diversión comienza a las 14:00 y la admisión es de  20 USD en la puerta.

Transporte Gaby (Richard Morales) – le invita a visitar su nueva oficina aprobada por INTUR en frente de Villa Isabella. También puede visitar a Harry, el chico de administración de propiedades SJDS, al mismo tiempo.

“El Shaddai Beauty and Spa” – ha pasado de Las Delicias a la antigua oficina de Unión Fenosa en la calle a la gasolinera Uno (la entrada a la ciudad).

Patos Surf Shop - ya está abierta y tendrá una gran apertura a principios de junio. Mike Duckworth… (¿Ahora entiende por qué lo de patos?) Es el dueño y comprador de la panga y todo el equipo de Joey el australiano, y tiene nuevo local 20 metros al sur del Barrio Café, para completar el servicio. Patos Surf ofrece, pesca y excursiones pesca submarina a todos los lugares importantes arriba y abajo de la costa de SJDS. También será el distribuidor oficial de las marcas Quiksilver y Roxy para la ciudad. Mike también está estudiando proyectos comunitarios y se propone apoyar a los niños locales con algunas nuevas ideas interesantes y creativas.

La tienda de souvenirs – que estaba al otro lado de Café Barrio se encuentra ahora en la calle que va entre Aurora e Iskra Travel.

Big Wave Dave está aún resistiendo – con el Mercado de los Granjeros las mañanas de los sábados de 9:30 a 12 del mediodía. Cerrado el resto de la semana.

With a post Semana Santa look at what’s new in SJdS

As reported a few weeks ago, the old La Galeria location is to become a new, bigger Banco LAFISE BANCENTRO bank location. Work started just before Easter Week transforming the existing building into the bank area with offices being built at the bank in what was the walled garden/patio area.

The old (first) La Panga location next to the downtown casino is just about ready and should be open soon. The renovation of the space and new locally made furniture looks good and I’m told it will feature smoothies and snacks.

DIAKACHIMBA! – SurfNicaWaves has opened their new store in San Juan del Sur in the new mini mall opposite Hotel Colonial.  DIAKACHIMBA is one of their brand names (and is also a common local saying) of clothing and surf accessories. These guys are also into the Nicaragua Beach Cleanup initiative and giving back to the community and up and coming surfers.

I don’t really understand having another surf shop in the same location but the mini mall owners with only about 4 or 5 units have done exactly that. “DUCKS Surf Shop and Tours Opening soon” says the sign on the window.

Nacho Libre is a new eatery located in front of Azul Beauty & Spa in the downtown core. Nachos, Tacos, Ceviche and more.

The International Surf Club on the Chocolata (going towards the beaches) has closed. The business deal mentioned in our 29th of March edition fell apart and Ryan, the new manager, headed back to Key West.

A big Thank You to the Clean up Crews who worked so hard to keep up with the garbage and mess that gets dumped here every Semana Santa. It’s a thankless and frustrating job in the hot sun following people around who drop garbage as fast as the crew can pick it up. Thank you again, from everybody in San Juan del Sur.

 Dando una mirada después de Semana Santa en lo que hay de nuevo en SJDS.

Como se informó hace unas semanas, el antiguo local de La Galería va a convertirse en un nuevo y más amplio local del Banco LAFISE BANCENTRO. Las obras comenzaron poco antes de Semana Santa, la transformación del edificio existente en el área bancaria, con oficinas en construcción en lo que fue el recinto amurallado del jardín / zona patio.

El antiguo (el primer) local de “La Panga” al lado del casino del centro está casi listo y debe estar abierto pronto. La renovación del espacio y los nuevos muebles de fabricación local se ven bien,  me han dicho que contará con batidos y aperitivos.

DIAKACHIMBA! – SurfNicaWaves ha abierto su nueva tienda en San Juan del Sur en el nuevo mini centro comercial opuesto al Hotel Colonial. DIAKACHIMBA es una de sus marcas (y también es un dicho local común) de ropa y accesorios de surf. Estos chicos están también metidos en la iniciativa de limpieza de playas de Nicaragua y retribuir a la comunidad y los surfistas que vienen.

Yo no entiendo muy bien por qué tener otra tienda de surf en el mismo lugar, pero los propietarios del mini centro comercial con sólo unas 4 o 5 unidades han hecho exactamente eso. “DUCKS Surf Shop and Tours Próxima apertura”, dice el letrero en la ventana.

Nacho Libre es un nuevo restaurante situado en frente de Beauty Azul & Spa en el centro de la ciudad. Nachos, tacos, ceviche y mucho más.

The International Surf Club en la Chocolata (en dirección a las playas) ha cerrado. El negocio se menciona en nuestra edición del 29 de marzo, pero se vino abajo y Ryan, el nuevo director, se dirigió a Key West.

Un gran agradecimiento a los equipos de limpieza que trabajaron tan duro para mantenerse al día con la basura y el caos que se vierten aquí cada Semana Santa. Es un trabajo ingrato y frustrante en el calor del sol después de que la gente por ahí bota la basura tan rápido como los equipos de limpieza pueden recogerla. Gracias de nuevo, de parte de todo el mundo en San Juan del Sur.

Rumors, Truth and Fiction from the Streets of SJdS

El Tren Lounge & Bar brings a little New York style to San Juan del Sur with a modern lounge bar and indoor pool in the Hotel La Estación. Grand opening is this Saturday, 31st March.

Hostel Sunrise Beach has moved to the corner location that was Aladdin’s, across from El Colibri. The 5 year lease at their old location in front of Hotel Gran Oceana expired and the rumor is that the owners of that location will be running a hostel there themselves.

A new surf shop “Banzaii” is now open in the old Munkel location across from Hospedaje Eleonara. Usual array of boards, clothing and accessories.

Henry’s Iguana has added some more space with a beachside VIP Room/Lounge Bar off the main bar downstairs. Bar Restaurante Tere (in front) is going to be renamed “Tacos Tere” and will be serving Tacos and fast food to eat in or to go.

Some bright stars are leaving SJdS as James, Monica and “Luz Estrella” are moving to Mexico to further James’ music career and shed that “Pobrecito” image! His last show will be at the Black Whale tomorrow, Friday 30th and then he just may ‘guest’ for one number with The Persuasions, (aka the usual suspects from Managua; David Neal, Tony Ferrari, Larry Emmerson and guests) at his leaving party at BWD’s Roadhouse on Saturday 31st March.

The International Surf Club is under new ownership and Ryan, the new manager, is on site and working. Located out of town on the Chocolata, going north to the beaches.

El Tren Lounge & Bar trae un poco el estilo de Nueva York a San Juan del Sur con un moderno lounge bar y una piscina en el Hotel La Estación. La gran apertura es este sábado, 31 de marzo.

Hostel Sunrise Beach se ha mudado al nuevo local de la esquina en donde fue el  Aladino, al otro lado de El Colibrí. El contrato de arrendamiento de 5 años en su antiguo local frente del Hotel Gran Oceano ha expirado y el rumor es que los dueños de ese lugar va a abrir y operar un hostal ellos mismos.

Una nueva tienda de surf “Banzahii” ya está abierta en el local en donde fue la Tienda de Ópticas Münkel frente a Hospedaje Eleonora. Selección habitual de tablas, ropa y accesorios.

Henry’s Iguana ha añadido un poco más de espacio con un anexo lateral VIP Room / Bar Lounge en la planta baja. El Bar Restaurante Tere (al lado de Iguana) va a cambiar el nombre a “Tacos Tere” y se sirve tacos y comida rápida para comer en el lugar o para llevar.

Algunas brillantes estrellas están dejando SJDS como James, Mónica y ” Luz Estrella” se están moviendo a México para impulsar la carrera musical de James y ¡Despojarse de esa imagen de “pobrecito”! Su último concierto será mañana (viernes 30) en Ballena Negra, y luego tal vez sólo actúe  como “invitado” en algún número con The Persuasions (también conocidos como los sospechosos comunes de Managua, David Neal, Tony Ferrari, Larry Emmerson e invitados) a su fiesta de despedida en el Parador de BWD. Sábado 32 de marzo.

El Club Internacional de Surf tiene nuevo propietario y Ryan, el nuevo director, está trabajando en el sitio. Situado fuera de la ciudad sobre la carretera hacia las playas del norte camino a  La Chocolata.

“Muy Caliente” – Get ready for two very hot months as weather experts claim that March and April could be in the top ten warmest months since 1850. They predict that from the first day of March to the end of April, Nicaragua will experience temperatures of almost 38 degrees Centigrade.

A New Coffee Shop – will soon be open in the old La Panga space next to Hostal Casa 28.

Texas Two Step? – Yes, El Lucero (The Texas Lonestar Restaurant & Bar – next to the market) may have found a new location nearer the beach road. Its top secret right now but its only Monday morning.

“You want Ice with that Chicken? – An agreement has been reached between the producers and the vendors on how much ice is allowed to be left in the whole chickens and parts. The dispute started when vendors noticed that up to 35% of the 100 pound bags of chicken was ice.

Gas is Down – From last Sunday a 25 pound tank is about 8.5 Córdobas less than the previous week (the 10 pound is 3.5 Cords less and the 100 is almost 40 Cords cheaper).

Harley Days comes to SJdS this Saturday – Expect the bikes in town any time after 1pm. The evening event starts at 8:30pm at Hotel ANAMAR. Entrance is $12 for the pre-event and $15 for the main event.

Karma Vida – is the bright orange painted location on the south side of Hostal Casa 28, just down a bit from the new coffee shop. Books, clothes, snacks and more.

Casa Maderas Ecolodge – is now open for guests. The sister location to Casa Oro Adventure Centre in SJds boasts a pool, bar and restaurant services (Restaurante Sabores Playa Maderas), surf/beach store, Wi-Fi and an internet room, telephones to compliment the eight large cabins.

Lucas and Travis from the Surf Ranch Action Sports Resort have just taken delivery of a new Air Pad (the big air bag a stunt man would fall into). They have it set up at the ranch with a steel water tower for you to climb up and jump off!

Rumores, verdades y ficción de las calles de San Juan del Sur

“Muy Caliente” – Prepárese para dos meses muy calientes, ya que los meteorólogos afirman que marzo y abril podrían estar entre los primeros lugares de los diez meses más cálidos desde 1850. Ellos predicen que a partir del día primero de marzo hasta finales de abril, Nicaragua experimentará temperaturas de casi 38 grados centígrados.

Una nueva cafetería – pronto será abierta en el antiguo local de La Panga junto al Hostal Casa 28.

¿Dónde está el Lucero? – Sí, El Lucero (el bar & restaurante tejano de la estrella solitaria) – al lado del mercado pueden haber encontrado un nuevo local más cerca de la calle costera. Por ahora es un secreto, pero apenas es lunes por la mañana.

¿Quieres hielo en tu pollo? – Un acuerdo ha sido alcanzado entre los productores y los vendedores respecto a la cantidad de hielo que se le permite dejar en los empaques de pollos enteros y en piezas. La disputa comenzó cuando los vendedores se dieron cuenta de que hasta un 35% de las 100 bolsas de una libra de pollo era de hielo.

Bajó el gas – Desde el pasado domingo, el precio de un tanque de 25 libras es de alrededor de 8,5 córdobas menos que la semana anterior (el de 10 libras sufrió una baja de 3,5 córdobas y el de 100 libras una baja de casi 40 córdobas).

Harley Days Nicaragua - The 24th, 25th and 26th of February 2012 is the annual Harley Davison meeting in Managua followed by the ride to San Juan del Sur on the 25^th and a big evening get together at Hotel Ana Mar. This event is quite spectacular.

A new “Mini Mall” has been quietly built in the three units between Maggies Chicken Restaurant and Cyber Leos. It features a central access point and several individual areas ready for a variety of different stores

Pau Hana Restaurant on the Beach Road has closed down. Kenny Nakai says; “Thank you everyone for your continued support”. Pau Hana was home to the “Legendary Open Mic” which moved their after Coquito’s, the first host, closed.

“La Paleteria de Frutas” can be found between El Gato Negro and The Irish House. They sell natural fruit ice cream.

Another new Ice cream place in San Juan del Sur “Gelato Italiano” in the Hotel Estrella where Lyles Kayak (formerly Waters Edge Real Estate) used to be.

A new Hotel “HC Liri Hotel” can be found across the footbridge going to La Talanguera and is behind the hostel that you will see from the bridge. Same folks who run HC Joxi Hotel are running this new one. So you can call in there (Joxi’s – see map) and ask about it. Liri is a town in Spain, near the French border.

Otra heladería en San Juan del Sur es “Gelato Italiano” en el Hotel Estrella, donde Lyles Kayak (donde fue Bienes Raíces Waters Edge ) .

Un nuevo hotel “HC Liri Hotel” se puede encontrar cruzando el Puente peatonal que  va a La Talanguera y está detrás del albergue que se puede ver desde el puente. Las mismas personas que dirigen HC Joxi hotel están ejecutando esta nueva alternativa de alojamiento. Así que usted puede llamar  (vea Joxi en el mapa) y preguntar. Liri es el nombre de una ciudad en España, cerca de la frontera francesa.

The Texas Lone Star Restaurant (aka El Lucero) will be open for weekends only for the next couple of months, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 10pm serving Steaks and Barbecue items.

Munkel, the optical store has closed its SJdS location.

The new deli ‘La Bodeguita’ (The Little Store) is up and running but not in the location first reported. They are on the road leading to the Texaco and are just past and on the sane side as Hotel El Puerto. They stock many of the popular Bavarian Deli and Don Pan items from the main locations on Carretera Masaya.

Just before you get to the deli is a new specialty store called ‘Fraiche’. They have a variety of perfumes and colognes. Valentine’s Day is coming up so check it out.

A reminder that the Farmers Market is back at BWDS Roadhouse every Saturday from 10am to Noon. Smoked meats, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, jewelry and more. Tables vary week to week. It is also a great place for newcomers to meet other Expats from the surrounding area.

The music store “Nica Tiki – Volcan Music” is almost ready. It is in the brightly painted ‘Reggae’ colored location down from Good Times Surf Shop as you walk towards Barrio Café.

Attention Tourists: There used to be an unwritten travel protocol of asking permission before you take photographs. Most people will be happy to be photographed however it is their choice. Coming up to young lady, sticking a camera in her face and shooting is not a good idea. Nicaragua does have privacy laws and the authorities are taking this sort of thing seriously, especially in the case of minors or where there are suspicious circumstances. El Restaurante Texano de la Estrella Solitaria (también conocido como El Lucero) estará abierto los fines de semana sólo durante los próximos dos meses, los viernes, sábados y domingos de las 12:00 a las 22:00 sirviendo filetes y barbacoa.

La tienda de Óptica Münkel ha cerrado su local en SJDS.

La nueva deli “La Bodeguita” (la pequeña tienda) está en funcionamiento pero no en el lugar que se informó la primera vez. Ellos están en la calle de la entrada a la ciudad, de la Texaco unos metros abajo y en el mismo lado que el Hotel El Puerto. Ofrece mucho de las populares Deli Bávaras y artículos de Don Pan de los principales locales en Carretera a Masaya.

Poco antes de llegar a la tienda de comestibles hay una tienda nueva de especialidad llamada “Fraiche”. Tienen una gran variedad de perfumes y colonias. El Día de San Valentín se acerca para que pruebe.

Un recordatorio de que el mercado de los granjeros está de vuelta en BWDS Roadhouse todos los sábados desde las 10 am hasta el mediodía. Carnes ahumadas, frutas, verduras, productos de panadería, joyería y mucho más. Las mesas u ofertas varían de semana a semana. También es un gran lugar para los recién llegados para conocerse con otros expatriados de la zona circundante.

La tienda de música “Nica Tiki – Música Volcán” está casi lista. Está en el local de colores brillantes estilo “Reggae” justo por la Tienda de Surf Good Times si  usted camina del mercado hacia Barrio Café.

Atención turistas: Solía ??haber un protocolo no-escrito acerca de los viajes y el pedir permiso antes de tomar fotografías. La mayoría de la gente estará feliz de ser fotografiada sin embargo, es elección de ellos. Acercarse a una chica, poniéndole una cámara en la cara y disparar flash, no es una buena idea. Nicaragua cuenta con leyes de privacidad y las autoridades están tomando este tipo de cosas en serio, especialmente en el caso de menores de edad o cuando se den circunstancias sospechosas. Chabad House has opened a center for disseminating Orthodox Judaism by the Chabad movement. The Chabad houses, through the ‘Shaliach’ and ‘Shalucha’ (rabbi and his wife) host educational and outreach programs as well as activities serving the needs of the entire Jewish community (regardless of the degree of observance) as well as tourists. From the Beach Road in front of Pau Hana, go towards Park Avenue Villas and it’s on the right hand side.

A New Deli will be opening soon in the old La Panga location (the first one that is). Don’t know much more at this stage.

Buffet El Mesón (in Rivas) is a restaurant that is known for offering buffet style food where the customer can choose the portion and variety of food to their liking. They specialize in a variety of typical Nicaraguan food as well as international and vegetarian with desserts and natural juices. They also now offer a new option for people with special dietary needs such as food fat and salt free. They also offer the same buffet service for special events at the restaurant in Rivas. Carmen Álvarez is the owner of the premises and is continuously training her staff with the aim of providing quality products and services to maintain competitiveness in the local cuisine and live up to their motto, “The King of Good Flavor”.

Gioconda Belli and El Gato Negro are asking you “What is it about Nicaragua that gets under your skin?  In honor of Gioconda Belli’s book signing (“The Country Under My Skin”) on February 11th, they are holding a poetry competition with the same theme.  See page for more details and remember the deadline for entries is 3 p.m. on February 1st.

BWDS Roadhouse reminds everybody that live music is back with a slight change as Blues Nite is now on Thursday at 8pm and Sundays features James and Gio at 6pm. “Chef Steve” is also Grillin’ and Thrillin’ with a great line up of his own so come and try the new menu.

Chabad House ha abierto un centro para la difusión del judaísmo ortodoxo del movimiento Chabad. Las casas de Chabad, a través del ‘Shaliach’ o emisario y “Shalucha” (es decir, el rabino y su esposa) imparten programas de acogida educativa y de divulgación, así como actividades dirigidas a las necesidades de toda la comunidad judía (independientemente del grado de cumplimiento), así como los turistas. El local se encuentra justo en la calle costera en frente de Pau Hana, yendo hacia Park Avenue Villas y está al lado derecho.

Una Nueva Deli se abrirá en breve en el local en donde fue La Panga. No sabemos mucho más en esta etapa o las características del negocio.

Casa Maderas Eco Lodge, the new hostel venture inspired by Crisanto López (of Casa Oro fame) is now ready and will have its grand opening on the 14^th of January. The amenities include a rustic bar, restaurant services, swimming pool, surf/beach store, Wi-Fi internet, telephone and tourist information etc. The lodge has many ecological designs including a waste water treatment system which generates treated water for the irrigation of gardens and green areas as well as a plastic, paper and glass recycling program.

“Palmas” is SJdS’s newest food service and offers an economical menu of sandwiches, salads, smoothies, juices and more. It is in the old La Fragata location between Dorados and BanCentro.

Next to Palmas is a new liquor store selling the usual beer and liquor as well as all your take out needs such as limes, ice, cups and coolers.

Rumor is that we will get a “real” BAC bank in San Juan del Sur this year. Currently BAC operates a limited services outlet at the Pali store on the edge of town as well as an ATM in front of The Casa Blanca Hotel.

Casa Maderas Eco Lodge, nuevo hostal creado por Crisanto López (Casa de Oro) ya está listo y tendrá su gran inauguración el 14 de enero. Los servicios incluyen un bar rústico, servicios de restaurante, piscina, tienda de surf / playa, internet Wi-Fi, teléfono e información turística, etc. El albergue dispone de variados diseños ecológicos que incluyen un sistema de tratamiento de aguas residuales que genera el agua tratada para el riego de jardines y zonas verdes, así como programa de reciclaje de plástico, papel y vidrio.

“Palmas” es el nuevo servicio de alimentos de SJDS y ofrece un menú económico de sándwiches, ensaladas, batidos, jugos y más. Ademas, todo el pan es preparado en casa. Está localizado en donde fue “La Fragata” entre Bar Dorados y Bancentro. Al lado de “Palmas” hay una nueva tienda de licores venta de cerveza y el licor de costumbre, así como todas las necesidades que de ello derivan como limones, hielo, vasos y termos.

El rumor es que vamos a tener una “verdadera” sucursal del banco BAC en San Juan del Sur este año. Actualmente BAC opera una toma de servicios limitados en la tienda de Pali en las afueras de la ciudad, así como un cajero automático en el frente del Hotel Casa Blanca.

Is back & barking with; Who’s Who at the Zoo?

Move over Naked Tiger, we have a Surfing Donkey! Yes, that is the name chosen for the much talked about 70 bed hostel soon to be open at the entrance to Barrio Frente Sur. Casa del Mar (the light green and white house across from Arribas) is a new Hostel – Bar boasting an all-day happy hour and new beds.

Hostal Sueños del Mar is now open (was Casa Feliz). Gaby has done a nice job on the renovation and the place looks a lot more open and inviting. It’s located between Villa Isabella and Royal Chateau Hotel.

The removal of the zinc fence around the construction site on the corner across from Casa Oro has revealed a nearly finished 8 room or so hotel that looks like it just needs windows and furniture to complete nice job of beatifying that corner. (Two doors down towards the center of town, the 3 story hotel/condo building continues to make slow progress.

With a commanding view over the town, Hotel Maracuya Bed and Breakfast boasts Hostel prices and a free breakfast. Access is through Barrio Pedro Joaquín Chamorro behind El Gato Negro.

David Jones, the “Ukulele Man” has taken over the old Jimmy’s Café space and will be turning it into a music store in the New Year.

San Juan has added another country to the eclectic choice of dining with a Peruvian style seafood eatery called Delicias Peruanas. It is about 1 ½ blocks down from the park on the same side, and just before Hotel Gran Oceana.

By the time you read this, the top sun deck at Henry’s Iguana Bar will likely be totally finished. This beach side addition offers a nice shady extension to the downstairs bar as well as an unobstructed view of the bay from the second floor deck.

Over the road, Dorado’s Bar and Grill has decided to start the construction next year, after Xmas and New Year and has now re-opened.

Movamos el cursor sobre el Tigre desnudo (Naked Tiger), tenemos un burro Surfista (Surfing Donkey) Sí, ese es el nombre elegido para el tan mentado albergue de 70 camas, que se inaugurará próximamente en la entrada al Barrio del Frente Sur. Para continuar con el tema de los animales, “Cat” (que sería “gato” en español) es el nombre del administrador de este hostal de gran tamaño que se localiza en la antigua Casa Comunal Gaspar García. Casa del Mar (la casa color blanca con verde claro, enfrente de Arribas) es un nuevo hospedaje-bar que cuenta con una happy hour todos los días y camas nuevas.

Hostal Sueños del Mar ya está abierto (donde fue Casa Feliz). Gaby ha hecho un buen trabajo en la renovación y el lugar parece mucho más abierto y acogedor. Se encuentra ubicado entre Villa Isabella y Hotel Royal Chateau.

La eliminación de la valla de zinc alrededor del sitio de construcción en la esquina enfrente de Casa Oro ha revelado un edificio de 8 habitaciones casi terminado parece algo así como un hotel que sólo tiene ventanas y muebles para completar buen trabajo de renovar esa esquina. (dos puertas más abajo hacia el centro de la ciudad, la construcción del edificio hotel / condominio de tres pisos continúa avanzando con lentitud.

Con una vista imponente sobre la ciudad, Maracuya Bed and Breakfast cuenta con precios como de hostel y un desayuno gratis. Usted debe buscar este local en el Barrio Pedro Joaquín Chamorro detrás de El Gato Negro.

San Juan ha añadido otro país a la ecléctica elección de sitios para comer, con un restaurante de mariscos al estilo peruano llamado Delicias Peruanas. Se localiza del parque, una cuadra y media abajo,  justo antes de Gran Hotel Océano.

En el momento de leer esto, la terraza superior del Henry’s Iguana Bar  probable que esté totalmente terminada. Además este lado de la playa ofrece una extensión de agradable sombra para el bar de abajo, así como una visión sin obstrucciones de la bahía desde la terraza del segundo piso.

Sobre la calle costera, Dorados Bar & Grill ha decidido comenzar la construcción el próximo año, después de Navidad y Año Nuevo y ahora ha vuelto a abrir.

17th November Edition

Bars continue to go up! – Dorado’s Bar and Grill (was Maria’s) is closed for a huge renovation which (if it goes to plan) will add two more floors to this corner location in front of Henry’s Iguana Bar. The plans are for a bar restaurant on the ground floor, a soundproofed air/con disco/club on the second floor capped off with a third floor rooftop patio bar.

Meanwhile, over the road at the aforementioned Henry’s Iguana Bar, more space is being added with the expansion of the second floor on the beachside over the ground floor sun deck.

Hostel Casa Feliz is closed but not for long as the location was quickly picked up by Gaby from Gaby’s Laundry and Spa fame and is being renovated before re-opening once again as “Hostal Sueños del Mar”.

Aladdin Restaurant & Hotel has re- invented itself and opened up the corner of the building as a bakery and a new manager partner will be running the Lebanese style restaurant.

Kudos to Kenny from Pau Hana for recognizing the recent passing of one of boxing’s true champions; “Smokin Joe” Frazier with a movie evening showing Frazier’s 1971 fight with another great; Mohammed Ali. Afterwards he showed a documentary of the Ali named “Thriller in Manilla”.

VOSH-Connecticut  (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) will be hosting its 11th mission to San Juan del Sur from January 7th to the 14th, 2012. Optometrists, Opticians and Optometry Students will be holding a 4 day clinic. More details will be published later.

Zen Yoga has a Spanish speaking instructor and encourage locals to come to lessons at 6pm Tuesday and Thursday.

Rincon Eco-Bio (the Morgan’s Rock farm) has a new organic food store just down from Munkel Optical opposite the old Jerry’s Pizza location. They will be selling; fruits, vegetables, eggs, chicken pelebuey (“cordero” – a short hair sheep bred for this climate).

¡Los Bares siguen subiendo! – Dorado Bar and Grill (donde fue el Marie´s Bar) está cerrado por una enorme renovación que (si va según lo previsto) añadirá dos plantas más en este local esquinero frente al bar Iguana. Los planes son para un restaurante bar en la planta baja, un aislamiento acústico de aire / discoteca / club en el segundo piso con un bar en el tercer piso en la azotea.

Mientras tanto, sobre la misma calle en el Bar Iguana, habrá más espacio con la expansión de la segunda planta hacia el lado de la playa sobre la cubierta de madera.

Hostel Casa Feliz está cerrado, pero no por mucho tiempo ya que el lugar fue recogido rápidamente por Gaby,  de la Lavandería y Sala de Masajes Gaby, y está siendo renovado antes de volver a abrir una vez más como “Hostal Sueños del Mar”.

Aladdin Restaurant & Hotel se ha reinventado y ha abierto la esquina del edificio como una panadería y un nuevo socio gerente va a operar el restaurante de estilo libanés.

Felicitaciones a Kenny de Pau Hana por el homenaje  a uno de los verdaderos campeones del boxeo, “Smokin Joe” Frazier recientemente fallecido, homeaje realizado con una noche de película que mostró la pelea de Frazier con otro grande Mohammed Ali en 1971. Posteriormente se presentó un documental sobre Ali  ”Thriller en Manila”.

VOSH-Connecticut (Servicios de Optometristas Voluntarios para la Humanidad) Realizará su onceava misión en San Juan del Sur del 7 al 14 de enero de 2012. Optometristas, técnicos ópticos y estudiantes de optometría llevarán a cabo una clínica de 4 días. Más detalles se publicarán más adelante.

International Surfers Club is San Juan del Sur’s newest place to stay and is located on the east side of the Chocolata Road, just past the entrance to Las Miradores and in front of Nacascola Bay. It has six double sized rooms as well as a private lounge upstairs while downstairs has a full kitchen, bar and huge entertainment area which includes a brand new Connelly (Granada) championship pool table, a ping pong table and dart boards. Last Friday the 28th of October was their grand opening. Ed Mullen from Louisiana and his Mexican wife Malleli Bernaldes served up a few sample dishes of what you can expect in the way of home cooked food with some very authentic fajitas, baked ham with macaroni cheese and a steak dinner.

International Surfers Club es el nuevo lugar de San Juan del Sur para quedarse y está situado en el lado este de la carretera a la Chocolata, justo después de la entrada a Las Miradores y frente a la bahía de Nacascolo. En la planta alta cuenta con seis habitaciones de tamaño doble, así como un salón privado, mientras que abajo tiene una cocina completa, bar y una enorme zona de ocio, que incluye una nueva mesa de billar de campeonato Connelly (Granada), una mesa de ping-pong y dardos. El pasado viernes 28 de octubre fue su gran inauguración. Gaspar Garcia Laviana, Poet, Priest, Soldier and Martyr was famous for his work with the poor. Now, the “Casa Gaspar Garcia” that bears his name, will soon be home to weary travellers as a budget conscious backpacker’s hostel and will be the largest of its kind in town with a proposed 70 bed capacity.

“Phone Home” at the new International Call Centre called ‘Llamadas Heladas’ opening any time soon in the ’3 plex’ of retail spaces between the Gym and Gaby’s on the corner.

Grab a “Smoothie” after your work out from the new location right next door to new call center and the gym at San Juan’s latest Smoothie and Juice bar.

Sushi Q is open again after a vacation break.

El Colibri will be re-open on Wednesday 2nd of November at 6pm.

“Phone Home” en el Centro de Llamadas Internacionales el cual estará abierto muy pronto en el complejo Triplex (tres módulos) que se localizan entre el gimnasio y la esquina de la tienda Gaby.

En la misma fila de tiendas al por menor hay una nueva tienda de herramientas, que también tiene pequeños artículos para la reparación de la construcción. Mercado Municipal – Las comiderías del mercado estarán cerradas durante aproximadamente 6 semanas por reparaciones en la infraestructura. Tel-cell – La tienda de teléfonos móviles y accesorios está celebrando su tercer aniversario este mes con ofertas especiales como el 40% de descuento en todos los servicios para el mes de octubre. The Dog is Back with the “Chisme” (gossip) from the street

Rosti Pizza La Fragata has found someone to rent the restaurant so stop by and meet the new administration.

Monica’s Salon, the ladies salon has moved one street back and is now next to Roberto’s men’s hair salon.

The 70 bed hostel is becoming a reality as the roof is literally being raised on the north end of the building on the same side of the road as El Colibri, going south towards Barrio Frente Sur.

The old Adelante Express office space, next to Spa Sol y Luna is being fitted out as an international call centre. (Remember Adelante Express is in the Century 21 office, beachfront)

This one’s Hot! Remax is back. The SJdS franchise has been obtained by a well known local realtor and will be resurrected soon.

The Tenth Anniversary of the Panga Tournament will be in late November so as not to clash with the election. 10 years! That is amazing! (Panga Tournament that is!).

Big Wave Daves is opening every Saturday for the Farmers Market from 10 am – 12 noon. As for when he will re-open the bar full time, maybe he won’t, but someone else wants to, so stay tuned. I just hope they keep the same name (crazy not to) because Big Wave Rodney doesn’t quite have the same ring!

Rosti Pizza La Fragata ha encontrado a alguien para alquilar el restaurante, para operarlo  y cumplir con la nueva administración.

Monica’s Salon, el salón de belleza se ha mudado a otra calle y ahora está junto al la barbería de Don Roberto.

El hostal de 70 camas se está convirtiendo en una realidad ya que literalmente, el techo fue levantado en el extremo norte del edificio en el mismo lado de la calle de El Colibrí, hacia el Barrio Frente Sur.

Las viejas oficinas de Adelante Express, junto a Spa Sol y Luna está habilitado como un centro de llamadas internacionales. (Recuerde Adelante Express está en las oficinas de Century 21, frente a la playa)

El décimo aniversario del Torneo de Panga será a finales de noviembre para no entrar en conflicto con las elecciones. ¡10 años! … ¡Increíble!

Big Waves Dave está abierto todos los sábados para el Mercado de los Granjeros de 10 am – 12 pm. En cuanto a cuándo va a volver a abrir como bar de tiempo completo, tal vez no, pero alguien quiere, así que estén atentos. Sólo espero que mantenga el mismo nombre (en serio), ya que Big Wave Rodney no suena igual.

The End of an Era? Who knows! After all, this is San Juan del Sur and the anvil could still float yet! The PR is that Big Wave Daves bar and restaurant is closing for the “Green Season” but will re-open November. However, it may be a new owner that will be operating this icon of a watering hole. So hold tight, the self-acclaimed “Best Half Assed Bar in Nicaragua” may be around for a while yet.

Just down the road towards the beach, Rosti Pizza La Fragata is looking for someone to rent the restaurant “As Is”, (lock, stock and smokin’ pizza). See the classifieds for more details.

As reported last week, VIP – Very Italian Pizza is now open and had the title of San Juan’s newest restaurant for about a week until the Nicaragua Beach Lounge (in the old Versilia Beach Italian Restaurant) took it to even the series. The newest food place is a beach front restaurant specializing in traditional Nicaraguan Food. It should be open now.

The green and white paint job on the south side of the bright red Enitel (Claro) office indicates that San Juan’s newest banking outlet, Banpro, is just about ready for business in this historical building.

The International Beach Clean-Up is this Saturday starting at 7:00am on the Malecon in front of the Sports Park in SJdS. The event is organized by Paso Pacifico and co-sponsored by City Hall, MARENA (Dept. of Environment) and INTUR (Dept. of Toursim)

¿El fin de una era? ¡Quién sabe! Después de todo, esto es San Juan del Sur y aquí… ¡Hasta un yunque podría flotar! – El rumor que hay por ahí es que el bar y restaurante Big Wave Daves tendrá un cierre temporal debido a la “Temporada Baja”, pero volverá a abrir en noviembre. Sin embargo, puede ser que un nuevo propietario opere en este icono de la ciudad. Así que manténganse al tanto, el auto-proclamado “Mejor Bar en Nicaragua” puede estar ahí por un tiempo todavía.

Justo en la zona costera, Rosti Pizza La Fragata está buscando arrendatario para el restaurante “tal cual”, (con todo). Vea la sección de clasificados para más detalles.

Como se informó la semana pasada, VIP – Pizza muy italiana ya está abierto y obtuvo el título de el restaurante más nuevo de San Juan durante una semana hasta que Nicaraguan Food (especializado en comida tradicional nicaragüense) abrió sus puertas en el antiguo restaurante italiano Versilia Beach lo que “vino a empatar la serie”. Debe estar abierto ahora.

El trabajo de pintura en verde y blanco en el lado sur del edificio de color rojo brillante, Enitel (Claro) indica que la oficina más nuevo de San Juan ya sale de la banca, Banpro, está casi listo en este histórico edificio.

La Limpieza Internacional de Playa es este sábado a partir de las 7:00 am en el Malecón, frente al Parque Deportivo de SJDS. El evento es organizado por Paso Pacífico y co-patrocinado por la Alcaldía, MARENA (Ministerio de Medio Ambiente) y el INTUR (Instituto de Turismo).

The Italians are coming here! VIP…not a celebrity but a Pizza place. By the time you read this, VIPizza (Very Italian Pizza) may already be open across the street from Barrio Café (in the old Vastu Boutique). “You can never have too many pizza joints!” says Sergio?

Gentlemen, need a makeover? Barberia “Super Star” will have you looking like a million Córdobas. Next to Hostal Casa 28 in the old Movistar store.

Big Wave Daves is planning on closing for a while in the slow season or “Green Season” as its known in some circles. Sunday will be a bit of an end of season Jam Party with James and the Gang at 6pm. More on the “Grand Re-Opening” plans when the big man makes the announcement. Either way, there will be a “Big Wave”.

Jimmy’s Coffee Shop has reopened, however Jimmy’s Hostel has closed indefinitely.

¡Llega una italiana VIP!… no es una celebridad, pero sí una pizzería. Para cuando usted lea esto, VIPizza podría estar ya abierta en la calle donde se localiza  Barrio Café (donde fue la tienda de ropa Vestu). “¡Las pizzerías nunca sobran!”- dice Sergio.

Señores ¿Necesitan un cambio de imagen? Barberia “Super Star” le hará lucir como millonario. Junto al Hostal Casa 28, en donde fue la tienda de Movistar.

Big Wave Dave´s planifica un cierre por la temporada baja. Más información sobre los planes de su “Gran Reapertura ” cuando el “Big Man” haga el anuncio. De cualquier manera, habrá una “gran ola”.

La tienda ‘Jimmy´s Café’ ha vuelto a abrir, sin embargo, ‘Jimmy’s Hostal’ ha cerrado indefinidamente.

The corrugated zinc wall on the corner opposite Casa Oro hides a construction project that will see the complete re-building of the bar restaurant that was in the space after the former fereteria. There will be hotel rooms at the back and a restaurant in front. A single story building for now but expansion plans have been designed into the new building.

Versilia Beach – Bar Ristorante Italiano, the little white place towards the north end of Beach Road, has closed permanently.  The tenants were looking for someone to run it while they were away but appear to have abandoned that idea. I´m told its $500 a month with all the furniture and equipment.

El Caracol (Conch or Snail in English) is a new bar and eatery right next to Casa Oro on the main road to the beach. They have a good selection of food items (local and other tourist favorites).

Ready for this? A new 70 bed hostel. That’s the rumor. More when it’s for sure.

Get ready to be lured in to buying something shiny in a store selling Fishing Lures and Jewelry that is about to open in the old salon space next to Casa de la Pintura opposite Mache’s Bar. Look for the new blue and white paint job.

Around the corner from and tucked in between the bright yellow Comedor Ixtal and the old El Pozo is a new clothing store. Lucia Obando is the proprietor.

The daily drum beat is the sound of the various school marching bands practicing for the Independence Day Parade on the 15th of September. Only two more weeks to go!

El Perrito de la Azotea

Tras el cerco de zinc corrugado en la esquina opuesta a Casa Oro se esconde un proyecto de construcción, que verá la reconstrucción total del restaurante bar que estaba en ese espacio después que hubo una ferretería. Habrá habitaciones de hotel en la parte posterior y un restaurante en el frente. Un edificio de una sola planta, pero por ahora los planes de expansión han sido diseñados en el nuevo edificio.

Versilia Beach – Bar Ristorante Italiano, el pequeño local blanco en el extremo norte la calle costera, se ha cerrado de forma permanente. Los inquilinos estaban buscando a alguien para operarlo durante su ausencia, pero parece que han abandonado ese concepto. Me han dicho que el local se renta en 500 dólares al mes con todo el mobiliario y equipo.

El Caracol es un nuevo bar y restaurante justo al lado de Casa Oro en la calle principal a la playa. Tienen una buena selección de menú (los platillos favoritos  de los locales, del turismo y otros).

¿Listo para esto? – Un nuevo albergue de 70 camas. Ese es el rumor. Más información cuando estemos seguros de los detalles.

Prepárense para ser atraídos a la compra de algo brillante en una tienda de venta de señuelos de pesca y joyería que está a punto de abrir en el espacio donde estuvo ante un salón de belleza, junto a la Casa de la Pintura, enfrente del bar L´Mache. Busque el local recién pintado de azul y blanco.

“Dé vuelta en la esquina” y métase entre el Comedor Ixtal (pintado de amarillo brillante) y el antiguo local de El Pozo, hay una nueva tienda de ropa. Lucía Obando es la propietaria.

El ritmo del tambor, todo el día y todos los días,  es el sonido de las bandas musicales de las diferentes escuelas practicando para el desfile del Día de la Independencia el 14 y 15 de septiembre. Faltan sólo dos semanas más.

Roof Dog, out on the Malecón

The Beach Road or “Calle Paseo del Rey” is the scene of a lot of activity right now and gets the whole column this week. So here it is starting way south to the north:

Contrary to rumors and opinions, the Japanese funded Shin Komatsu Fishing Terminal is not going to become a Disneyland attraction. (Who started that aquarium rumor anyway?)

A Vegas style attraction is open as Atlantic City Casino (on the Pacific, tucked in the corner of the dock area) was packed with gamblers last Friday attending opening night.

The Blue Marlin Mexican Grill is having a one year anniversary weekend on the 20th and 21st of August.

Century 21 Nica Life (Realty/Lifestyle) is the new stylization of the corner office center operated by John Goldenberg and his team.  Eric Gabriel has done a great job on the design and re model of this space. Real Estate, the new San Juan Surf store, Adelante Express Transport and the SUP (Stand Up Paddle) board rentals – the proceeds of which help support local surfers.

Lawyers, Garcia & Bodan have settled into their new offices in the old Remax location on the beach road opposite the Cuban bar.

Just along the road a bit, Ashley from Chica Brava is getting ready for an external makeover for her HQ opposite Pau Hana.

Next to Pau Hana (home of the Maugust Mustache Madness Month), Meson Español is putting the finishing touches to their long awaited new restaurant. After the paint, plants and varnish they will be ready for the furniture.

Finally, Hotel Ana Mar invites you to their new lounge bar at the back of the hotel. The new pool will be ready soon and the bar is offering great sunset specials.

La calle costera o “Calle Paseo del Rey” es el escenario de una gran actividad en este momento y toda la semana. Así es que… aquí comienzan las novedades de sur a norte:

Contrariamente a los rumores y opiniones, los japoneses que financiaron la  Terminal Pesquera Shin Komatsu no va a convertirla en una atracción al estilo  Disneylandia. (Por ahí se dijo que la iban a convertir en acuario)

Un atractivo al estilo de Las Vegas ya está abierto, “Atlantic City Casino” (sí, Atlántico pero en el Pacífico, el lugar está escondido en la esquina de la zona del muelle) estaba lleno de jugadores el viernes pasado, todos ellos asistieron a la noche de apertura.

El Blue Marlin Mexican Grill tendrá un  fin de semana cumpleañero el 20 y 21 de agosto.

Century 21 Nica Life  (Bienes Raíces / Estilos de vida) ha hecho una nueva remodelación al local de la oficina de la esquina, operado por John Goldenberg y su equipo. Eric Gabriel ha hecho un gran trabajo en el diseño y el modelo nuevo de este espacio. La oficina de Bienes Raíces, la nueva tienda San Juan Surf,  Transportes Adelante Express y el SUP (Stand Up Paddle) alquiler de tablas – que apoya a los surfistas locales.

La oficina de leyes de “García & Bodán” se ha instalado en sus nuevas oficinas en el antiguo local de Remax en la calle costera enfrente del Bar Rancho La Cubana.

Yendo por mismo el camino y a poca distancia, Ashley de Chica Brava se prepara para un cambio de imagen exterior de su local frente a Pau Hana.

Junto a Pau Hana (casa de Maugust Mustache Madness Month),    El Mesón Español está dando los toques finales a su largamente esperado nuevo restaurante. Después de la pintura, las plantas y el barniz para los muebles, estará listo.

Por último, el Hotel Ana Mar te invita a su nuevo lounge bar en la parte trasera del hotel. La nueva piscina estará lista muy pronto y el bar está ofreciendo ofertas especiales durante los atardeceres.
